As India witnesses the bhumi pujan for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, let’s revisit the decades of attempts to obfuscate the truth by people who were supposed to uphold it instead.
The Ayodhya issue is not a normal religious dispute — the existence of a temple historically has been recorded and so has its destruction and the subsequent building of the Babri Masjid there in the 1500s. The same is recorded in Babur’s own personal logs, Baburnama.
One of the first notable excavations was carried out by Lord Cunningham which noted that there were structures that existed in Ayodhya but they were relatively modern and archeologically like Buddhist Stupas more than temples.
